Champagne and celebration have always had a close relationship. Early records point to the 5th-century Romans cultivating the wine in Northern France, possibly even earlier. When Hugh Capet was crowned king of France in 987, Champagne became the wine served at every coronation. A tradition started in 987 and continues to this day, Champagne and celebration.

Cap Classique, or Methode Cap Classique as it has been known until recently, started in Stellenbosch around 1971. Local winemakers began experimenting with techniques used in the region of Champagne, instead of merely injecting CO2 to create the bubbles. These techniques created sparkling wines with smaller bubbles and a more refined taste than their CO2 counterparts.

If the end of another year brings celebration, then Lanzerac’s Brut Cap Classique should surely follow. Made to showcase Jonkershoek Chardonnay, this Cap Classique forgoes the traditional Pinot Noir/Pinot Mineure blend and comprises only Chardonnay grapes. The result is a refreshing take on Cap Classique, with emboldened citrus and apple flavours, finishing with a creamy and biscuity aftertaste. During December, Wine Club members can celebrate with our Magnum Cap Classique at 25% off.

At the end of a long, World Cup-winning year, celebration and Champagne are definitely on the cards. But this year, let’s change it to Cap Classique.
