This December, Lanzerac will be hosting an exclusive mixology Summer Masterclass featuring some of Cape Town’s most renowned mixologists. Taking place on 11 December 2020, the Masterclass will introduce attendees to the art of mixology, with the hosts imparting knowledge on the history and architecture of cocktails. Attendees will also learn how to create show-stopping drinks at home, perfect for impressing friends and family during the holiday season. Each cocktail will be perfectly paired with canapés, prepared by Lanzerac’s Executive Chef Stephen Fraser.

This event is the latest in a six-part Summer Masterclass series at Lanzerac, which sees an impressive list of influential collaborators hosting various Masterclasses throughout its run. Attendees are offered the chance to not only learn from the best in the business but work alongside renowned masters of the industry in various creative fields and backgrounds. The first of the Masterclasses took place in October and November, where floral design extraordinaire Heike Hayward and Executive Chef Stephen Fraser dazzled guests with their industry knowledge and skills respectively.

Award-winning mixologists on board

The latest Masterclass will feature guest speakers Justin Shaw and David Van Zyl. Shaw, a finalist in the national World Class Championship, is a liquid chef at leading cocktail bar Cause Effect in Cape Town. The bar recently won awards for South Africa’s best cocktail bar and best bar team and is known for its unique offerings, cocktail creativity and focus on the natural elements surrounding our city since its opening in late 2017.

Shaw’s flair for the extraordinary and his whimsical approach to creating unusual combinations have brought him wide acclaim in the industry. Joining Shaw will be guest speaker and mixologist David Van Zyl, who was previously a winemaker and currently focusing on botany. His passion for quality, natural ingredients and a hands-on, experimental approach have afforded Van Zyl many accolades, including the current title of 2020 Patrón Perfectionists.

The art of mixology

Mixology is defined as the art, study or skill of inventing and/or preparing mixed drinks, or cocktails. Mixologists are passionate about drink making by creating unique and exciting combinations using certain techniques. The mixology Masterclass will give attendees a taste of exactly what it takes to create the perfect cocktail, or mocktail, to serve guests during your holiday celebrations.

Guests can expect to get a better understanding of the architecture of the perfect cocktail. We will be covering the current trends in the cocktail industry, as well as teaching guests how to use unique and versatile ingredients to create memorable beverages.

The mixology Summer Masterclass will take place on 11 December 2020, from 14:00 – 17:00 in the Craven Lounge at Lanzerac. The cost is R750 and is inclusive of the workshop, coffee/tea and snacks on arrival and canapés served with your cocktails. For bookings, please contact [email protected]. Limited space is available.
