It comes as no surprise that celebrating International Pinotage Day at Lanzerac is a highlight on all Pinotage Lovers’ calendar each year.

International Pinotage Day, dedicated to South Africa’s own unique grape varietal, will be celebrated at Lanzerac over the entire weekend, and what better way to mark this auspicious occasion than at the home of the world’s first commercially bottled Pinotage.

Professor Abraham Izak Perold, the first Professor of Viticulture at the University of Stellenbosch, created Pinotage in 1925. His cross-pollination of Pinot Noir and Cinsaut only produced four seeds, which he planted and carefully tended to a mere two km’s from Lanzerac. It was during the harvest of 1959, when the Stellenbosch Farmers’ Winery cooperative, realised the potential of that year’s vintage, and in 1961, created the world’s first bottled Pinotage, using the Lanzerac label. Today, Pinotage is the third-most-planted red grape in the South African winelands, and one of Cellar Master, Wynand Lategans greatest passions.

On Saturday the 9th of October, and Sunday the 10th we are celebrating in the Tasting Room & Deli which will be transformed into a wine lovers dream with tables for guests to relax and enjoy a perfect Wineland’s day out with friends and family whilst listening to live entertainment by LLEVADO.
